The story goes that the tradition of serving free hot meals in Sikh temples comes from Guru Nanak, the first of the 10 Sikh gurus. When he reached the age of manhood his father gave him 20 rupees and sent him out to trade and make a profit. Guru Nanak instead used the money to feed and clothe some holy men. His father was not impressed but Guru Nanak persisted, founding the tradition of Langar and believing that true profit comes from selfless service.
